How Close Has the World Come to Nuclear War? 5 Times Disaster Was Narrowly Avoided

The world has experienced several nuclear war close calls, but not every dramatic retelling matches the historical evidence. In most cases, no leader was literally seconds away from pressing a launch button. The danger came from something more complicated: incomplete information, technical failures, military pressure, and decisions made before officials could know an alarm was false.

These five well-documented incidents show how a mistake or misunderstanding could have escalated into a nuclear confrontation—and what prevented that from happening.

1. The Cuban Missile Crisis: October 1962

The Cuban Missile Crisis is widely considered the closest the United States and Soviet Union came to nuclear war. After the United States discovered Soviet nuclear missile sites in Cuba, President John F. Kennedy imposed a naval quarantine while both governments prepared for possible conflict.

The most dangerous day was October 27. A Soviet missile shot down a U.S. U-2 over Cuba, while another U-2 accidentally entered Soviet airspace. Kennedy resisted immediate military retaliation and continued negotiating with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

Under the Atlantic, U.S. ships used signaling depth charges to force the Soviet submarine B-59 to surface, unaware that it carried a nuclear torpedo. Later accounts indicate that its commander called for the weapon to be prepared, believing the submarine might be under attack. Senior officer Vasily Arkhipov helped calm the situation, but some details of the exchange remain disputed.

The crisis ended after Khrushchev agreed to remove Soviet missiles from Cuba. Kennedy publicly pledged not to invade Cuba and secretly agreed to remove U.S. Jupiter missiles from Turkey.

2. A Training Tape Creates a U.S. Attack Warning: 1979

On November 9, 1979, warning displays at U.S. command centers showed what appeared to be a massive Soviet missile attack. Nuclear bomber crews were alerted, interceptor aircraft took off, and an airborne command aircraft was launched.

The warning was false. A training scenario depicting a Soviet attack had mistakenly entered an operational NORAD computer system.

Satellite and radar systems showed no actual launches, allowing officials to determine within minutes that the warning was an error. There is no evidence that President Jimmy Carter considered ordering nuclear retaliation. Even so, the incident caused real military alert actions and demonstrated how simulated data could enter systems used during an actual crisis.

3. Stanislav Petrov and the Soviet False Alarm: 1983

On September 26, 1983, a Soviet early-warning system reported that the United States had launched one intercontinental ballistic missile, followed by four more.

Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, the duty officer at a Soviet warning facility, questioned the alert. A U.S. first strike involving only a few missiles seemed unlikely, and ground radar had not confirmed the satellite report. The warning was eventually traced to sunlight reflected from high-altitude clouds.

Petrov did not have personal authority to launch nuclear weapons. His decision prevented the unconfirmed warning from being treated as a verified attack at that stage of the reporting chain. It is reasonable to say that his judgment reduced the risk of escalation—but the popular claim that one man definitively “saved the world” goes beyond what the available evidence can prove.

4. Able Archer 83 Is Misread as Possible War Preparation

Only weeks later, NATO conducted Able Archer 83, an exercise that rehearsed procedures associated with the transition from conventional to nuclear conflict. It occurred during an exceptionally tense period in U.S.-Soviet relations.

Declassified U.S. intelligence records show that Soviet forces increased their readiness and that the Soviet 4th Air Army made preparations associated with the possible immediate use of nuclear weapons. U.S. intelligence officer Lieutenant General Leonard Perroots noticed the unusual Soviet response but recommended against raising NATO’s real alert level.

The exercise ended without incident, and Soviet forces returned to normal readiness. Historians still debate exactly how close the Soviet leadership believed NATO was to attacking. There is no conclusive evidence that Moscow was preparing to launch nuclear weapons, but a later U.S. intelligence review concluded that the two countries may have been placed on a dangerous “hair trigger” through misperception.

5. Russia Mistakes a Norwegian Research Rocket for a Missile: 1995

On January 25, 1995, Russian radar detected a research rocket launched from Norway to study the aurora borealis. Its flight initially resembled a possible U.S. submarine-launched missile.

Norway had notified Russia in advance, but the information apparently did not reach the right warning personnel. Russia alerted its strategic forces, and President Boris Yeltsin and senior military officials activated their nuclear command briefcases.

Russian officers soon determined that the rocket was moving away from Russian territory, and no launch was ordered. The event reached a high level of command, but available evidence does not show that Yeltsin was on the verge of authorizing an attack.

Why These Nuclear Close Calls Still Matter

These incidents do not prove that nuclear war was inevitable. They show that deterrence has repeatedly depended on accurate sensors, reliable communication, independent confirmation, and people willing to question incomplete information.

Modern systems may process warnings faster, but leaders can still face compressed decision times during a military crisis. Cyber threats, damaged satellites, technical failures, and ambiguous missile launches could make an already tense situation harder to interpret.

AI may increasingly assist with intelligence analysis and early warning, but there is no public evidence that AI independently controls U.S. nuclear launches. The central lesson is broader: speed should not replace verification or meaningful human judgment when the consequences of an error cannot be reversed.
